Ira and Libby Levy - 2004
Ira and Libby Levy were selected as recipients of the Georgia Cities Foundation's "Renaissance Award." The Levys accepted the award during the Annual Convention of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) Monday, June 28.
The Renaissance Award recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the revitalization of one or more of Georgia's cities. In choosing the Levys, the Selection Committee noted the number of homes the couple have restored and renovated in Rome, along with Sterchi's, at the corner of Broad Street. Ira Levy is also a partner in the 1915 Forest Hotel, which has been renovated under the direction of Libby Levy, an interior designer. The Forrest Hotel now has 26 upscale apartments, retail space on the street level and banquet/reception facilities. The project cost was $3.2 million, with funding provided by the Georgia Cities Foundation, DCA's DD RLF program and a local bank.
Ira Levy's current project in downtown Rome is the Battey Machine project, to be known as River Crossing. Mr. Levy is project manager and one of seven partners involved with this project. Upon completion, this project will contain 12,000 square feet of commercial space, 38 hotel suites and a restaurant.
"The Levys have been leaders in downtown development," said Georgia Cities Foundation President Mike Starr. "They have demonstrated a great passion for creating a vibrant, healthy city and through their leadership have played an integral role in the revitalization of Rome's downtown."
